Jack and the Beanstalk at The Mercury Theatre

On Monday we was very lucky to be invited to visit The Mercury Theatre for this year's pantomime, Jack and The Beanstalk. Lylie is only just two so perhaps a little young to fully appreciate the story of Jack and The Beanstalk, however she was captivated for the entire performance which lasted two and a half hours with a twenty minute interval. Although pantomime is generally aimed at family friendly fun there was definitely some references thrown in just for the adults benefit which had myself and my husband giggling away. Dame Trott, Jack's mum was comedy gold for the duration and as a big finale even gave the man sitting next to me a very welcomed birthday lap dance he will never forget.

Yes there is a boy called Jack, a giant (sort of) and a beanstalk but this is not a story you have previously heard... you will understand when I tell you the key 'he's behind you' moment cam curtsy of Darth Vader... I'm serious!

The man who completely stole the show for us was Day-Z the rapping Cow, Lylie hasn't stopped talking about him since. And she sobbed uncontrollably when Jack sold him for magic beans 'Oh no mummy poor Day-Z, poor Day-Z' I had to calm her down with chocolate buttons until she knew he was safe. The show was full of audience participation, lots of booing at the bad guy and to Lylie's complete delight the chance to have a boogie to her favourite ever song, baby shark! The music was a mix up of lots of well known songs, including Queen classics and That Greatest Showman song the world is going crazy for. The Mercury Theatre were able to keep the show current, even managing to include flossing and dabbing sending the school children at our showing into excited applause throughout the performance.

If you are looking for some good family fun that you will all enjoy I 100% recommend this pantomime. And as always the mercury theatre is a pleasure to visit.
