Tips for Thicker Healthier Hair.

Most people have that one thing that they wish they could change about their appearance, right?
Well for me it's my hair!

My mum is a hairdresser and always knew what was best for my hair (of course she did but I didn't agree at the time) when I moved out of her house I decided she was no longer in control of my hair and went on a mission to get it exactly how I wanted it. The problem is sometimes you just have to work with what you've got rather than completely changing it, this is a lesson I learned the hard way!
The picture above is my hair at its worst and then a recent snap where my hair is visibly in much better condition.

Here are some tips that have helped my hair get back on track:

1. Not washing my hair everyday - My hair tends to get oily fairly quickly, and people with a fringe will know that struggle, however washing your hair everyday can be damaging. Our scalps produce a natural oil which helps protect our hair from outside damage so washing this away every day is not the smartest move. I have picked up a dry shampoo which helps for those inbetween days.

2. Avoiding the use of heat - If I am having a lazy day or just going into work I will not bother to curl my hair. I am lucky as my hair is naturally completely straight (getting a wave is the problem) but I know if you have more of a frizz to your hair you may find this one a challenge.

3. Using a hair mask - This is not really something I considered before but the difference using a hair mask has made is extensive. During my hairs lowest point where it was basically breaking away I was advised to use a Keratin mask, Tresemme Keratin Smooth is a deep treatment mask and my one of choice.

4. Invest in my products - I know not everyone has the ability to do this and I am sure there are some fantastic brands also available on the highstreet, however as my hair was so desperate I invested in the Aveda invati scalp revitalizer range . The products are proven to reduce hair loss due to breakage and help you keep the hair you do have for longer.

5. Changing my style - It is easier to fake the look of thicker hair when styling. Adding a soft wave to the hair adds texture, and using root lifting products also works a treat. Two products that have been rocking my world recently are Redken Diamond Oil & Redken Quick Tease.

Right now for some embarrassing photos ...

So let's quickly go through these various monstrosities above. Firstly I went from normal blonde to REALLY BLONDE, which isn't too bad however the bleach made my hair really dry and damaged not ideal. Dip dye became all the rage so I went for a girlie pink (I also had an identity crisis and went really Essexy yay me) I actually liked the pink ombre for Summer but come Autumn it made clothing choices rather restricted. I wanted a Caroline Flack style dip dye however the hair dresser buggered it right up, the ends of my hair ended up a bluey grey (thankfully I took no photos) as you can see I ended up having no choice but to go brunette. Although lots of people said they liked my hair darker I felt like I had lost my mojo, it probably cost near £1000 to get my hair slowly back to blonde.

Then I made the biggest mistake. I had micro ring hair extensions fitted, I instantly regretted it, although they look pretty cute in the photo above of me in Ibiza, it was a nightmare to style. As my hair is so fine you could see the rings in my scalp and it felt like sleeping on a beaded chair cover. When they came out I had hardly any hair left, and this was just before my wedding, oh the crisis! I ended up wearing clip in extensions for my wedding day and have spent the two years since trying to rescue my poor hair which now looks like the last photo - thank goodness.

I am sorry this post has been a bit more word heavy than usual, please let me know if you have had any hair disasters so I don't feel silly alone!

  2. it took me a long time to realise I didn't need to wash my hair everyday! It gets greasy pretty quickly but the constant washing was making it worse, so I cut down and now I wash it twice to three times a week. It's in much better condition now and also it's a lot less effort!

  4. These are really good tips, washing your hair less often makes a huge difference. I think we all have a hair crisis at one point, when I was 16 I dyed my hair so many times that it looked really damaged, it took me a while to rescue it. Your hair looks amazing now btw. x
